Safe roads are one of the four elements of the Safe System approach that aims to achieve the ultimate goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on Australian roads.

Human error is a factor in many crashes. The likelihood and severity of these mistakes can be minimised with safer road design and by installing a range of safety treatments. Treatments may include barriers, wide centrelines, and signage upgrades. Under the Safer Roads Program, local councils can apply for funding to get these safety treatments installed.

Our team was commissioned to inspect three fatal crash sites within the Central Coast local government area. We analysed existing crash data and carried out comprehensive site assessments to identify safety deficiencies at each location. Our team then developed interim safety treatment options to address these deficiencies, with a focus on the Safe Systems model. Our work has assisted and formed part of Council’s submission for fatal crash funding via the Safer Roads Program.
